Masters of Advanced Study (MAS) Programs Appointment Procedures

MAS programs are executive education programs for engineering professionals which lead to a graduate degree.

What is an MAS Degree?

  • Advanced professional education and advanced liberal studies in a variety of flexible and conveniently scheduled formats.
  • Offers UC-quality instruction in a manner that accommodates the schedules of working adults.
  • Unlike more traditional master's degree programs, the Master of Advanced Study program will concentrate on a set of coordinated coursework with culminating projects or papers rather than emphasizing student research.
  • Program generally features a number of interdisciplinary offerings to meet the changing needs of California's workforce.
  • Offers working professionals who have already completed a bachelors, and sometimes a masters, a more convenient way to acquire an additional, specialized masters degree congruent with their professional and personal interests.

  1. Lecturer Files-Unit 18
Appropriate for individuals without current faculty appointments at UCSD who will be teaching or co-teaching a course. These individuals must have a Master's degree or higher. They can be from industry or outside the University, or they may have a current non-faculty appointments at UCSD. Any individual with a current appointment at UCSD may not exceed 100% total appointment time. This may cause their current appointment to be reduced. Make sure to coordinate with all departments in which the individual has an appointment.  For more information on Unit 18, refer the bargaining unit contract.  You can also reach out to the Dean's Office AP staff to assist in answering questions and providing guidance.
  2. Overload Teaching Agreements

    1. Overload Teaching Agreement Form
    2. Overload teaching policy and procedures
  3. Recall to faculty positions
Appropriate for individuals who have retired from the UCSD in an academic tile and are now returning to teach.
  4. Lecturer-Miscellaneous
This title is appropriate for individuals who are being proposed to teach a course or courses for more than two weeks in a quarter, but less than a full quarter, who do not hold a title with the University, who are brought to the University for their expertise in a given subject, and who are paid a "By Agreement" (BYA) salary. These should be done rarely and should be done after consultation with Dean's Office Staff.
  5. Adjunct Appointments
On a case by case basis, a department may wish to appointment an Adjunct Faculty member to teach. Adjunct appointments require contributions to research, teaching, and service and are made on a two or three year basis (depending on rank and step). Typically the faculty member is appointed as "non-salaried" and is then brought onto salary status to teach the course. This is typically initiated at the department level, so contact the appropriate AP Department contact for initial discussions and the Jacobs School Dean's Office for further guidance.
  6. Visiting Professors
Appropriate for faculty coming from another University to perform research in a lab but who will also teach in an MAS program. These are initiated by the Department.
  7. Intercampus appointments (including intercampus recall appointments) for faculty positions.
Appropriate for individuals who are currently employed at another UC Campus in an academic title and who will be teaching here at UCSD. Also appropriate for individuals who have retried from another UC Campus and are being recalled to teach here.

Note: Any appointments for individuals already appointed at UCSD whose home department is outside the School of Engineering must be coordinated with the home department. The MAS staff person would initiate the appointment and work with the home department to complete the appointment. The type of action and required paperwork will depend on the individual's current title. Contact AP staff in the Jacobs School of Engineering (Mindy Schroeder, mschroeder@eng.ucsd.edu or Tina Nguyen, tinguyen@eng.ucsd.edu) for guidance.

  1. Teaching Assistants
These individuals are usually appointed through HR, but department processes may vary. Contact Vanessa Torices vtorices@eng.ucsd.edu or Tina Nguyen,tinguyen@eng.ucsd.edu for assistance.
