Department Chairs

Departments are free to design their own procedure for identifying and nominate a chair, as long as it consistent with policy. Department Chair appointment policy can be found at http://adminrecords.ucsd.edu/ppm/docs/230-2.pdf.

Rewarding Service as Dept. Chair

Service as department chair is rewarded at the conclusion of such service — usually with a 1/2 step bonus.

Nomination Packet Items:

Department to Submit

  • Nomination letter- to include:
    • Description of process in department by laws and how it was followed (or not followed and why)
    • If not included in the above, a description of the vote and or level of participation of faculty in the process (or short summary if already detailed in the optional committee letter)
    • What qualities the candidate has demonstrated that are likely to lead to success as the Chair.
  • Committee Letter (Optional)
    • Usually describes the process used by the committee and details of the vote.
  • Candidate's CV
  • Any materials the candidate submitted for consideration as part of the regular departmental consultation/nomination process (e.g., statement of contributions to diversity)

Dean to add:

  • Divisional dean's evaluative commentary (endorsement letter)
