Affiliates

In cases where an adjunct appointment is not truly warranted, an affiliation may be considered. Adjunct Professors are required to make meaningful contributions to the teaching mission of the department, and must participate in departmental affairs and research. Affiliations present excellent opportunities for developing ties with Departments outside the home department without having to meet any teaching, research or service obligations.

Affiliations do not require formal approval and confer no official academic title or appointment, yet they provide a way for departments to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty outside their department with common research interests.

Terms

  • Affiliates must already have a faculty or other academic appointment on campus.  Exceptions may be granted in the case where the individual works at one of the institutions with an affiliation agreement with the UC San Diego campus.  Individuals not working in an academic title at UC San Diego or at an institution with an affiliation agreement may be eligible for limited affiliation on a case by case basis and will require the completion of the Oath and Patent.
  • Affiliate appointments are made for five year terms or concurrent with the end date of the individual's current academic appointment

Procedure

When an affiliate has been identified:

  • Complete the Affiliate Request Form
  • Attach a current BioBib or CV (updated within the last 18 months)
  • For exceptions, complete and submit
    • An Exception Request Memo OR Proof of Affiliation Agreement with UC San Diego (if not the affiliates list)
      • Exception memos need to be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine potential liability.
    • Signed Oath and Patent
    • Personal Data Form
  • You may attach additional documents if you wish.

All requests should outline the reason for the request (i.e. proposed activities).

No formal approval is required for affiliates, but the Dean must be informed of affiliations as they are appointed.

The department appointing the affiliate may list the affiliated faculty in the general catalog as "affiliated" with the department.

Reappointment for a new five year request follows the same procedure as the initial appointment.
