When completing new appointment files, please include a section about mentoring in the department letter. Below is sample language you may use as a template (feel free to modify this as needed):
Professor/Dr. ___________ will be mentored by Professor X, who is a senior faculty member in the department of __________. As his/her mentor, Professor X will provide Professor/Dr. ______ informal advice on aspects of teaching, research, and committee work, other service, and/or, direct him/her to other resources. In assisting Professor/Dr. ______ to adjust to and learn about UC San Diego, Professor X will help him/her identify key individuals for different tasks, find funding opportunities, resolve problems, learn relevant policies and procedures, and determine priorities for him/her a s new faculty member. Professor X will provide invaluable support in this role, particularly as Professor/Dr. _______ prepares for the tenure review process. In that regard, Professor X, in conjunction with the department chair, can explain the evaluation profess and expectations for Assistant Professors and the upper ranks of the professorial series.
